I once placed a factory order for a J-car. Not actual car pictured — mine was black, and had a 5-speed (manual was the reason for the order).

Hey, at least it’s a manual. I’ll let it slide.

I was also a GM employee at the time, and wanted a quick stickshift convertible for not too much monies.

That severely limited my options - I basically just bought the fastest GM stick convertible I could afford.

Sound reasoning.

I confess I seriously considered the Chevy Bolt.

Big difference between that and a Stinger!

Certainly... I’m just very wierd. In two years I hope to buy a Niro as well...to help the stinger out with the commute.

I have a soft spot for wierd low volume cars I guess.

Sound reasoning which led to me buying a bad car LOL

My wife owned a black Sunbird coupe of the same vintage when we were married. Hers was a V6 and fairly zippy.

Mine had the turbo referenced in the article. Quite a bit quicker than the V6 but awful reliability.

The Niro is a really good looking car.

These did look pretty good in black. And I have an irrational love for the fact that this was a nice cheap way to get a convertible.

Convertible makes everything forgiven. For me anyway. Now that this is out, you pretty much ruined your chances for a political career.

They replaced the turbo with the V6 because it was smoother, put on the power more quickly, and was more reliable. Oh, and it only had 10 fewer horsepower. The turbo was rated at 150 hp, the V6 140 hp.

They did look pretty good in black. Mine had a white perforated vinyl interior too. It looked good and was a lot of fun with the stick and turbo. But damn that was a trash engine.

The later turbo in my car was 165 hp actually. 150 was the earlier 1.8 IIRC. But otherwise you’re exactly correct.

Mine ate 4 turbos and 2 head gaskets in 52k miles. I kid you not.

If I recall correctly, your only other options would’ve been a Camaro or a Corvette.

A buddy of mine used to repo cars for GMAC around that time. Man does he have some stories!

Yup, that’s exactly right. And no way I could afford either one of those.

This was 1990 — which also meant that the Z24 wasn’t an option, either.
